
Part-Time American Sign Language Teacher
Schedule: One weekly class (meets 3 – 4 hrs per week)
Goal
The Westview High School seeks an engaging and enthusiastic American Sign Language (ASL) instructor to teach one ASL class to high school students. The class will meet 2 to 3 times per week. The ideal candidate will bring a passion for ASL and Deaf culture, skillfully foster student growth in communication and cultural understanding, and create an inclusive, handson learning environment.
Qualifications
- BA in American Sign Language, Deaf Studies, Education, or related field — required
- Valid Texas Teacher Certification or ASL interpreter certification — required
- Teaching experience in ASL or foreign languages at the high school level — preferred
- Experience working with diverse learners, including those with special needs — preferred
Skills / Knowledge
- Fluent in ASL with strong Deaf cultural competency
- Creative and enthusiastic teaching style that engages high school students
- Proven ability to differentiate instruction based on student proficiency
- Excellent communication skills—both signing and written/spoken
- Strong organizational abilities
- Collaborative mindset and positive, supportive attitude
Duties
- Design weekly ASL lesson plans emphasizing vocabulary, grammar, conversational skills, Deaf culture, and appropriate expressive and receptive signing activities
- Deliver dynamic, student-centered instruction that supports academic, social, and emotional growth
- Differentiate lessons to accommodate varied proficiency levels and learning needs
- Assess student progress through formal and informal tools: performance checklists, portfolio work, in-class demonstrations
- Maintain an inclusive, respectful classroom atmosphere that models appropriate signing behavior
- Collaborate with faculty and parents to support student progress and well-being
- Maintain and manage classroom materials and resources
